Dead and Missing Migrants (IOM Missing Migrants Project)

IOM Missing Migrants Project records of people who died or went missing in the process of migration towards an international destination, worldwide from January 2014, read from the full record HDX republishes as one file. Each record carries a date, the region and route IOM assigns, the number dead and the minimum estimated number missing, survivors, cause of death, countries of origin, coordinates, sources and IOM's source quality score. One incident can span several records under one IOM id, so totals are sums over records and incidents are counted once per id. PRISM sums the records by month on seven routes into Europe: six keyed by IOM's migration_route field (the Central, Western and Eastern Mediterranean, the Atlantic route to the Canary Islands, the English Channel to the UK and the Western Balkans) and a seventh holding every other record IOM places in its Europe region. It compares the year to date with the same days of the year before; the figures are otherwise as IOM publishes them.

Geographic coverageWorldwide, geocoded where IOM records coordinates; seven routes into Europe summed by PRISM
Temporal coverageRecords from January 2014; monthly route series from January 2014 to the latest recorded incident
Update cadenceChecked against HDX daily and downloaded when the file changes (IOM updates it weekly); a download replaces the cache only after it is read back with the expected columns, at least 15,000 rows, and dates and totals that parse
AccessSea Arrivals tab of the migration statistics dashboard (free account): dead and missing by month on the routes to Europe and a map of the incidents of the twelve months to the latest recorded incident; JSON at /api/missing-migrants/summary and /api/missing-migrants/incidents (free account)
LicenceCC BY 4.0 per IOM's Missing Migrants Project downloads page, which asks users to credit IOM and say whether the data were changed; HDX lists the dataset under CC BY-IGO 3.0.
